These Greek doughnuts are easy enough to make at home but taste like they're fresh from the bakery!

Ingredients

  • 1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water (110° to 115°)
  • 1/2 cup warm 2% milk (110° to 115°)
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Oil for deep-fat frying
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 4-1/2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon hot water
  • Chopped walnuts

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let stand until foamy, 5-10 minutes. Beat in milk and olive oil. Combine flour, sugar, salt and cinnamon; gradually stir into yeast mixture to form a soft dough (dough will be sticky). Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, 1 to 1-1/2 hours.
  2. Stir dough down. In an electric skillet, deep fryer, or Dutch oven, heat oil to 375°. Drop batter by tablespoonfuls, a few at a time, into hot oil. Fry until golden brown, about 2 minutes on each side. Drain on paper towels.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk honey, lemon juice and hot water; drizzle over warm doughnuts. Sprinkle with walnuts. Serve immediately.
