British Baked Beans

Heinz clearly know a thing or two about British baked beans, but this homemade recipe comes close. In fact, you can customize the beans into something even more exciting. 

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 cans (15 ounces) navy beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 can (15 ounces) petite diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon cider vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper

Directions

  1. In a large saucepan, heat oil over medium heat. Add onion, cook until soft, 4-5 minutes. Add garlic and tomato paste; cook one minute longer.
  2. Stir in beans, tomatoes, brown sugar, molasses, mustard, vinegar, Worcestershire, salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer; cook 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
